The Chester Family YMCA is in the heart of the Chester community. Located on W. Hundred Road, just west of Jefferson Davis Highway, you'll find programs and activities for the entire family.

 

The time has finally arrived! The CHESTER FAMILY YMCA will begin renovations and expansions. Please note the following temporary closure dates and service relocations: 

  • The Chester Y is CLOSED  December 13-15 in preparation for the facility for renovation. 
  • Starting on December 16, the MAIN ENTRANCE to the facility and the WELLNESS FLOOR will be relocated to the gym. 
  • CHILD WATCH, CHILD CARE and YOUTH PROGRAMMING are relocated to the gym. 
  • The MEN's AND WOMEN's LOCKER ROOMS will remain open.
  • The POOL will remain open.

Renovations FAQS

1. What renovations and expansions are happening at the Chester Family YMCA?

The Chester Family YMCA is undergoing significant renovations and expansions to be able to enhance the current experience for members and serve more individuals and families in our community. The project will include:

  • Overall renovation of the interior of the building
  • 4,330 sq ft of additional fitness space
  • Upgraded front facade of the building
  • Expanded lobby with an ADA accessible vestibule
  • New universal locker room with private stalls
  • Expanded Child Watch space (doubling its current size)
  • Upgrades to the men’s and women’s locker rooms
  • New multipurpose and group exercise spaces

2. When will construction begin and how long will it take?

  • Construction begins: December 1, 2024
  • Primary construction completion of Wellness Center, Additional Rooms and renovation of existing space (Phase 1): June 2025
  • Adult locker rooms and remaining upgrades (Phase 2): December 2025

3. Will the YMCA remain open during construction?

Yes, the YMCA will remain open during the construction period. However, certain areas may be temporarily closed or relocated. We will do our best to minimize disruptions and keep you informed of any changes.

4. Where will all regular activities take place during construction?

During the month of December, we will be moving all the fitness equipment into the gymnasium and will be running primarily out of there until June 2025. Our Pool, Child Watch, and Group Exercise classes will all remain available during construction. Timeline of construction and other communication will be forthcoming.

5. What improvements can members expect in the fitness area?

The fitness space will be expanded by 4,330 square feet, providing more room for exercise equipment, group fitness classes, and personal training sessions.

6. How will the lobby and entrance be improved?

The lobby will be expanded to create a more welcoming environment, and an ADA accessible vestibule will be added to ensure that all members can enter the building easily.

7. What changes are planned for the Child Watch area?

The Child Watch space will be doubled, offering more room and resources to care for children while their parents use the YMCA facilities.

8. Will the locker rooms be upgraded?

Yes, both the men’s and women’s locker rooms will receive significant upgrades, and a new universal locker room will be created for added convenience and accessibility.

9. How will the expansion affect community programming?

The renovations will allow the YMCA to expand several of its community programs, including:

  • Before/after-school programs
  • Summer day camp program
  • Teen programming
  • Senior and community impact programming
