The facade of the Downtown YMCA

In the Heart of Richmond

Located on W. Franklin Street, across from the Jefferson Hotel in the center of Richmond.

The Downtown YMCA has been serving the Richmond community for over 165 years. In the city center, where east streets meet west streets, you’ll find us on Franklin St. across from the Jefferson Hotel.

The Downtown YMCA is temporarily closed due to renovations. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding. We can't wait to bring back a fully modern and renovated facility in the new year.

Renovation FAQs

Q) Renovations have been happening since November 2023, and the facility has remained open. Why are you closing now?

A) A recent assessment regarding construction progress has led us to conclude that the most expedient way to meet our timeline of reopening by the start of the new year is to temporarily close the facility. As with all our renovation projects, our top priorities are minimizing disruption for our members and reopening as quickly as possible.

Q) How long do you expect the Downtown Y location to be closed?

A) We will close the Downtown Y, starting on September 7. We plan to reopen by the start of the new year.

Q) What about parking?

A) Parking options will not change from the current options.

Q) What is the benefit to closing? Why can’t you stay open as planned?

A) This temporary closure will expedite the construction process, ensuring that we can reach our timeline to reopen the facility by the start of the new year.

Q) What amenities will be available after you reopen?

A) The completely remodeled first floor will include the new wellness center, strength and functional training room, group exercise studio, universal locker room, and male and female locker rooms.

Q) What amenities will not be available?

A) The pool, second floor basketball gymnasium and squash courts will reopen in late April.

Q) What about the sauna and steam room?

A) The sauna and steam room will be re-located to the pool deck, with access to these amenities when the pool area reopens in late April.

Q) What if I have booked personal training or small group training at Downtown?

A) We will honor your training package at our 10th Street YMCA facility.

Q) Why are my membership fees the same, even though my amenities/access has changed?

A) Access to all locations and amenities is part of our standardized membership agreement and is not tied to the amenities available at your specific home branch when you joined. To augment the temporary closure, we have expanded hours at our closest location in proximity to the Downtown YMCA, the 10th Street YMCA.

Q) What are the closest locations near Downtown?

A) Our 10th Street YMCA, Northside Family YMCA, and Thornton YMCA Aquatic Center are located within 5 miles of the Downtown location. We are expanding our hours at 10th St YMCA. Members have access to all of our locations.
