Spirituality

Spirituality Vision Statement: to love, serve and care for all in the manner that Christ would.

"That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me."

John 17:21

Interfaith Day of Service

The YMCA of Greater Richmond Spirituality Ministry has spearheaded an Interfaith Day of Service in Richmond for the past two years. Working side-by-side with churches in the For Richmond network, the Weinstein Jewish Community Center, the Sikh Association of  Central Virginia, Keneseth Beth-Israel and more to help restore and beautify Woodland Cemetery. Woodland Cemetery, where thousands of African-Americans are interred, including prominent leaders like Arthur Ashe, is an important site in the history of Richmond.

The YMCA of Greater Richmond Spirituality Ministry strives to help support the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of our diverse staff, members and communities. We engage all people of diverse faiths, cultures, backgrounds and belief systems. We practice compassionate leadership to provide an environment free of judgement or discrimination. Our five areas of support include:

  • Prayer Support – Leading organized prayer opportunities for staff, members and community; providing scheduled Chaplain Chats at YMCAs to pray, engage and show support and compassion for all of our diverse members and staff, and respond to branch online prayer requests or prayer card requests.
  • Education - Creating opportunities to assist in learning and understanding of faith-based cultural events, observances and holidays.
  • Outreach - Convening the YMCA of Greater Richmond's faith-based partners and leaders in service to help families and young people thrive in their communities.
  • Crisis and Emergency Support – Providing resources for hospital/home visits for illness/grief support; organizing meal trains for individual/families and other support as needed.
  • Special Events – Hosting YMCA of Greater Richmond faith-based special events, including National Day of Prayer, Good Friday Prayer Fellowship, Tuckahoe Family YMCA Prayer Breakfast, the Chester Family YMCA MLK Jr. Service Awards Breakfast, and other community faith-based events.
